We launched server2 earlier today. The machine is an absolute beast: Dual opterons are very, very yummy.
Now with that said the launch was both premature and late. We originally intended on launching server2 (although in a ‘smaller’ form — just for 2 heavy users) on February 7th.
We actually had the hardware rented and ready to go on February 1st. Due to my frustrations with a few issues I cancelled the server and gave up on freeBSD alltogether.
So now we’ve gone ahead and rented a dual opteron rather than just a single p4 as intended (just to ‘qualm’ a few large users): It packs quite the punch though.
This morning was absolute chaos
At about noon I noticed an increase in hits going to server1. A few moments later I received a message from one of our longtime clients (pre-fused days) that he had a large influx of visitors.
Almost immediately the server load was creeping up: He was at 100 concurrent users and counting with no end in sight… Within moments I had gone ahead and reluctantly suspended the user and was making arrangements to have a second server brought online within an hour.
As always our provider hit the target: There were a few delays with the cPanel installation but in the end the user was thoroughly satisfied — enough to post a review/testimonial on both our official forums and webhostingtalk!
Just another day in the chair…
